ailing Tierna

October 29, 2003 *

I have a dilemma on my hands. My dearest little rat has gotten old in the short amount of time I've had her. She's gotten skinnier and yet her tumors have grown. She doesn't always pull her back end up into the hammock with her front (and when I touch her feet to help her hoist herself in, her legs are icy cold from cut off circulation).

I have told myself that she isn't going to have any more surgeries, and yet those tumors are so large. Both are the size of shelled walnuts or so. She doesn't seem to have much energy lately, so even Nancy (the petsitter) wrote that she wondered if Tierna wouldn't be better off living alone because Malia is just too much to handle.

Here I sit, wondering what to do. I figured while in Vegas that I could probably start giving Tierna some children's Tylenol to ease her arthritis pain, but didn't call to find out until today. (I forgot to call the vet's yesterday). I didn't get a call back until after I'd left for DDR.

Dr. Borut says that she can have baby aspirin. Half an 81 mg pill twice a day if she's willing to take it that often. I'm excited to find out that it's okay to give her something to ease her pain. She's stiff and sore and since she's been losing weight she doesn't seem to like to be picked up. I will have to go get her a pill-cutter and some baby aspirin tomorrow.

I think she will be somewhat willing to take the pills once she figures out that it makes moving around easier. (For the time being, she's still got the hammock to crawl into, but no other obstacles in her cage really). I got inspired to make a miniature cat bed. You know the kind. The ones that have an oval shape, a dip in one of the sides for easier entry and a cushy bottom. I might just have to make a little dome on top to ensure that she will feel safe sleeping in it.

If I plan on putting the little girls back together, I will have to make it large enough for the two rats to cuddle in there. Otherwise, Malia will take it upon herself to push herself in and Tierna out anytime she damn-well pleases.

As of today, Tierna is 2 years, 7 and 1/2 months old. She deserves to have an easy time from here on out.
