Mother's Day Surprise

May 12, 2002

I knew I was going to have dinner with Mom today, so I was going to bring the presents I made for her, and her card. I haven't mentioned before what I actually made for Mom because she reads these entries, so I couldn't very well let her know ahead of time, so here goes...

I believe I mentioned that I started knitting awhile ago. I learned how to do purl and knit stitches and I ended up playing around with it a bit. Using a baby blue yarn and smaller needles, I started making a checkerboard, and I decided it was looking quite nice. Therefore, I made it into a little square piece that will be used as a hotpad. I wanted to try some more stitch patterns, so I tried what is called a ribbed pattern. It turned out quite nice, but it was kinda tedious to do. I ended up making another square piece out of it, but it ended up smaller than the checkerboard square I did, so I decided to make something extra to go with the ribbed pattern square.

I made another ribbed pattern square, approximately the same size, and then I took a yarn sized sewing needle and sewn them together. Well, at least around 3 sides. I wasn't sure if it needed to be a pouch or a doubly thick hotpad. So I left it unfinished so Mom could tell me what was the right idea she wanted. She was so tickled that I had MADE her gifts, by something that she had retaught me that she was excited either way! That made me feel good.

Then I was standing in the kitchen, when Mom came out with a golden wrapped present for me. I looked at her like she was losing it. Then I read the tag as Mom was telling me that my girls "wanted" to get me something for Mother's Day! WHAT?!

Only little Tierna is my baby girl. Maxine is my roommate! Oh well. I'm not going to argue "them" being thoughtful. Hehe...

I started to push on it a bit. It was kinda squishy, but not liquid squishy. It was soft, but still had a definate shape. I couldn't imagine what it was. The only thing I could think was a play tube for Tierna. That seems like something "Tierna" would get me. Hehe.

So I opened the package to find a one-pound roll of yarn! ONE POUND! That's a lot of yarn! I smiled, it wasn't at all what I thought it was, but then again, I wasn't expecting anything, so it was a total surprise.

I may never have real children, but it's good to know someone depends on me. It makes me feel needed... important. Thanks girls!
(...and mom!)
