Movie day

June 8, 2002 *

Seventeen days.

Last night I had called Mom to see if she wanted to go to the movies. I haven't been to the movies since I was in California with Ryan. And then before that.... hmm... a VERY long time before that. So long, that I don't even remember.

I knew Mom wanted to see Spider-Man, as did I. So I checked on time listings and location. I also checked what was playing at the second rate theatres, just in case.

I'm glad I did, because we ended up going to the major second-rate theatre here. We had settled on A Beautiful Mind. I've wanted to see it since it's about a mathmatician, mental illness, and it has a good plot. I knew I'd want to go to the earlier showing, so I had my mind prepared for waking up at a certain time to make it in enough time to walk over to Mom's (if it wasn't going to be too hot) and we could drive there with plenty of time to spare.

So, I walk over to Mom's house today. She's been busy trying to figure out a way to package the whimsies. The back room/dining room has been transformed into a miniature factory or something! I sit down next to Mom and we search web pages for more places to purchase potential whimsie packages.

In our focus to find the right bags or whatnot, we lose track of time. I notice, and we slightly scramble to get out the door. But.. not to worry. We made it to the movie in time.

Plenty of time.

In fact, the movie listings online were different from the ones at the theatre. So different, that the first showing of A Beautiful Mind was in over 2 hours! Damn!

Mom and I reconvene. We look at the listings, and I tell her what each movie is about (although I have not seen any of them)! Finally, we decided we would see a movie at this time, and perhaps see A Beautiful Mind afterwards.

We opted for Big Trouble starring Tim Allen, Rene Russo, and a huge cast of other funny people. I had heard mildly bad reviews for it, but I still thought it looked funny enough to see. (Not really a first-rate viewing, but a movie theatre viewing would be nice).

After watching it, I could see how it could get some bad reviews. If you weren't in the mood for a half-slapsticky, half-good humor comedy, you wouldn't enjoy it as much. But if you were in that mood, it was hilarious. It had a good character set-up. Very unique. It was never lagging, and had believeable characters. I couldn't believe how many people were in this movie that were near-headliners themselves.

All in all, if I had to rate this movie out of 10 points, I'd say it comes in at an eight. Strong comedy and characters, non-offensive humor in most aspects makes for a wider acceptance of laughs! :)

After the movie, we went to Hobby Lobby and Petco. We looked for some more things to use to package the whimsies, and then at Petco looked for travel cages for Tierna. (The East side Petco, not the West Side one I went to last week).

The East side Petco had SOOOOOOOOOO many more small animals then the West Side one! Mom and I just watched all the activity going on in all the cages. It was so entertaining. Mom said that she really like the black ones. Hamsters, mice, rats (ok, they didn't have any black rats), any rodent in black she liked. She also said that if she ever got a mouse, she would get it as a toy for the cats! Like, as in... no cage, no food for it... it would be a live toy.

The only thing wrong with that scenario. Penny. She would get the mouse first. You just know she would. She can't let the cats have ANY fun. That's Penny for ya.

After Petco, we went to the grocery store. I got some more much-needed milk, and other stuff. Mmm... food.

After grocery shopping, I was driven home and we called it a day. After all, we left for the movies about 3:15, and Mom probably got home about 8:40. Makes for a long day.
