Bad news

August 26, 2002 *

Today, Ryan was going to call Budget to rent the Ford Excursion, the biggest vehicle they have for rent. If you're not familiar with it's size, just imagine a full-size truck front with the back end of a van. It was massive. It was still at a rental place, and it was ideal.

Until...

We found out that the Ford Excursion isn't available for one-way rental! What?! Why didn't the stupid chick tell me that yesterday? I asked two questions: What's the largest vehicle you have for rent? and Do you have one way rentals? Don't you think she could have mentioned something then? What a dumb fuck! People are so stupid.

The largest they rent one way is the Ford Taurus. That's just a step up from the Tempo. It's a standard-sized car... not even full sized! Damn!

The other options are:
* fly with the girls, and have a moving company drive my shit to California
* rent a U-Haul type moving truck and drive it cross country
* now-moot option: rent a large vehicle and drive cross country

The flying option is out of the question now, because as I thought about how it would be for Tierna, I wouldn't be able to treat her that way. She'd be CARGO! That's inhumane -- and the layover is long. She'd be in an unfamiliar cage, she'd not have me with her. She'd be so scared. She wouldn't be able to sleep. She could have some heart trauma due to this... she's healthy, but I don't want to shave months/years off her life because of one move!

Maxine, on the other hand, would be able to be in the passenger area with Ryan. She'd be with him all the way, and safe. I wish that airlines (and people in general) didn't find rats "offensive". What's with people?

The U-Haul type moving truck option is quite costly, and it's not very practical. First of all, we would get horrible gas mileage, and second of all, we don't NEED that much space! I wouldn't feel comfortable driving something so large, and Ryan seems to feel the same way. This option is still viable because it's safer for the girls and it'll guarantee that my stuff will not get lost or be late or anything unforseen at this time.

The best option, which seems to be working against us... rent a large vehicle, and drive it ourselves. I'm personally against minivans, but it seems that that is the largest vehicle available in most cases. The problem is, one-way. And can we get unlimited miles? If not, how much are the additional miles?

We have come up with a plan if we do the driving route. The first day, we will drive to MN, more specifically, to Ryan's Dad and Stepmom's house. We will stay there the first night and then head out for the trip. It is beneficial for a few reasons to stop there:
1 - I can meet his Dad and Stepmom
2 - We don't have to pay for lodging
3 - We don't have to pay for dinner (if we get in early enough)
4 - It's not too far out of the way, and it makes for a good first day's drive.

I think I'm going to call Budget tomorrow and bitch and bitch and bitch. I WANT the Ford Excursion for a one-way trip. It's fucking ideal. If I can't get them to feel absolutely guilty for not offering it as a one-way vehicle, I hope that whomever I talk to will never forget how their company is neglecting the customer... and dammit! The customer is always right! Ha! So, they will do one of two things (or something in between): they will allow us to rent the Excursion one-way for a decent price OR they will just be big dumbasses and not even hear me out.

Ok... enough with the complications. I should at the very least say that we have found a moving company for under one grand! That's a good bit of news. It's just inconvenient to load and unload. But who ever said moving was going to be easy?
