Penny and Tierna

May 2, 2002

I've mentioned that my mom has a dog named Penny before, and if you've read (nearly) any entry, you also know that I have an adorable rat named Tierna.

Today, I walked Penny over to my place. Penny had already met my three girls, but it had been a long time since she'd seen any of them. I decided that I needed to compare Penny and Tierna's coat colors... just to see how they compare, ya know? Anyways, I went to Tierna's cage, but she didn't want to come out. Gee, I wonder why.

Penny had gotten herself all hot and drooly, so she was panting quite heavily when I was trying to get Tierna to come out of her Pepsi box. Tierna was a tad reluctant, since there was a new smell, and a new sound, and probably new moisture (but I didn't check or anything, I'm just guessing).

When I got Tierna out of her cage, Penny was in the living room, sniffing all of Tierna's cuddle buddy treats (and almost eating them if I wouldn't have stopped her). I sat on the couch, with Tierna in my lap. I tightened my grip on Penny's leash. I let Penny and Tierna sniff each other. Funny image: Tierna could fit her entire nose in one of Penny's nostrils (if she tried, I mean. She didn't actually want to be that close to Penny). Tierna RAN to the blanket as soon as I released my hand.

Penny went back to sniffing the Tierna cuddle buddy treats. I kept getting her leash shorter and shorter so she wouldn't eat them. (they are stored on the end of my coffee table, which is Penny's head level). Oh, maybe I should mention that Maxine had been surprised that I brought Penny home, but she wasn't freaking out like a normal cat would. She just wanted to be further away from Penny and observe at a distance. With that said, I will continue.

Penny was panting and breathing heavy and whatnot. Have I mentioned that she's a tad out of shape and she gets herself way too excited to go for a walk?

I had cleaned out Tierna's blanket and bedding under the blanket earlier today, so Tierna had to make it to her own liking when Penny stopped panting to hear what was going on. She had her big ole tongue hanging out of her mouth, breathing quietly so she could hear what was going on. She had never heard a little Tierna Wearna organizing her papers (kinda makes her sound like a business woman or something, huh?!). She was curious.

Curious enough to plop her head on the couch and start sniffing the blanket top. Tierna heard this disturbance, and ran to the little opening on the side of the blanket. She stuck her cute little head out (very cartoon-like) and looked around.

Penny noticed that Tierna was coming out "to play" so she moved her head near the opening. Tierna wasn't going to take any of that intrusive behavior, so she lunged at Penny, making her yip! I was so shocked that I couldn't tell immediately who made the noise!

Upon letting my brain process what happened, I recalled Penny jumping back as quickly as she could when the noise was made. Ah ha! Tierna totally kicked Penny's ass.... errr nose. Hehe...

To congratulate Tierna on her bravery/territory defending skills, I gave her an animal cracker. She liked that and ran back under the blanket. Needless to say, Penny didn't bother Tierna again. Way to go Tierna! She knows she's the boss. Even when she knew this new "beast" was large enough to eat her whole, she stood up for herself and said, "I'm a modern woman, and I won't let anybody tell me I am a little helpless female!"

I'm proud of Tierna. :-) My brave little girl!
